Hardwood Decks

If you decide on hardwoods for your decking material, you may consider picking Redwood or Western Red Cedar,or more tropical hardwoods like Ipe and Massaranduba. All of these are durable, long lasting choices that will add beauty to your house and landscaping.

Redwood Lumber

The unique properties of Redwood have made it one of the most desirable wood products for outdoor use, especially for decking.

  • No other softwood has the rich beauty or long-lasting performance of redwood.
  • In general, wood acts like a sponge; when it absorbs moisture it swells and when it loses moisture it shrinks. Redwood has thinner cell walls which shrink and swell less than other woods, so redwood is less likely to warp, split, cup or check.
  • Redwood heartwood is naturally resistant to decay and insects.
  • Redwood is a favorite with builders because it is lightweight but strong. It is easy to saw, nail and drill. Redwood has little or no messy pitch or resins.

Western Red Cedar Lumber

A deck made with Western Red Cedar lumber, one of the world's most beautiful woods, is apt to be one of the best looking decks in the neighborhood. But Western Red Cedar decks have much more going for them than good looks alone. Extending living space to the outdoors, integrating home and landscape, making use of damp or uneven terrain and giving a contemporary look to a traditionally- styled home are just a few of the ways that Cedar decks make life a little better.

Western Red Cedar decks are firm but resilient underfoot, not hard and unyielding. The wood is light weight, easily worked and ideal for almost all types of finishes. It has an elegance that complements any architectural style and a beauty that blends into all landscapes. Whatever the reasons for building a deck, there is just one natural choice of decking material. Available in a wide range of grades and sizes, and price-competitive with lesser materials, Western Red Cedar decks are the beautiful, practical, long-lasting complement to any home.

IPE Lumber

IPE is an incredibly durable Brazilian Hardwood rated by the US Forest Lab for 25 years plus. Naturally resistant to fire (rated class A by the NFPA or class 1 by the UBC) insects, moisture, and movement, IPE (16-20%) is perfect for exterior commercial and residential applications such as decking, docks, or exterior furniture. In service for over 25 years from Diner Key Marina in Miami, to the Atlantic City Boardwalk, IPÊ has proven durability. It can be sealed to maintain its natural beauty or it can be allowed to weather to be a beautiful silver gray.

When compared to other decking materials such as redwood, cedar, or copper chromium arsenate pressure treated materials, IPE gives longer life (3-5 times the life span), stronger resistance to fire, weather, insects and movement and is competitively priced with high grades of cedar and redwood. If you compare the one time cost of IPE to the 3-5 times you replace other materials over the life span of IPE, the value of IPE becomes very clear!

Massaranduba - Brazilian Redwood

Brazilian Redwood is one of the finest products available for exterior decking. Few decking materials combine the beauty of real wood with natural durability, strength and easy maintenance. Brazilian Redwood is well-known throughout South America and Europe as one of the hardest and most durable species available.

Brazilian Redwood is an environmentally responsible alternative to chemically treated and composite decking products. Nearly blemish free, Brazilian Redwood is strong enough to use 1" boards in place of 5/4" or 2" boards.

Brazilian Redwood is a dark red wood which will fade to a silver gray if left untreated. To retain the rich color, we recommend an oil based finish with ultraviolet inhibitors. Regular cleaning and reapplication of finish will ensure that the wood retains its beauty for many years.
